We’re thrilled to share our collection of pieces from Khanoom, a traditional pottery studio with a twist. Nestled just outside of the vibrant “Pink City” of Jaipur, Rajasthan, the special studio has a wonderful way of bringing tradition into the modern world.
The brand was co-founded by Priyamvada Golcha and British designer Simon Marks, each bringing care and expertise to the table. Golcha has leveraged her family’s fifty-year legacy in clay and particle technology and Marks has spent the last 20 years working with artisans in India and Indonesia.
The two of them have worked to create a studio dedicated to the art of preserving traditional miniature painting, which can be traced back to 9th-century manuscripts. Though it sounds like these paintings are always small, the term miniature actually refers to the very fine paint brushes made from squirrel hair. Miniature paintings can be found on smaller items like tea cups, but also can be seen on larger items like dining plates or art canvases. They are characterized by vibrant colors, intricate brushwork, and a high level of detail.
Khanoom has a commitment to preserving generational artistry by creating unique mediums for the craft to be applied to. This collection is crafted from Bikaner kaolin clay, hand-painted by traditional Rajasthani miniature artists, and finished with the studio’s signature glazes. The moment you hold a Khanoom piece in your hand, you know it’s a stunning testament to meaningful product creation.
Our featured collection draws inspiration from "De Materia Medica," an ancient Roman encyclopedia of plant medicine, blending historical influences with modern sensibilities.
